About

The challenge to humanity is to adopt new ways of thinking, new ways of acting, new ways of organizing society, in short new ways of living.
UNESCO document, Our Creative Diversity, 1995

PURPOSE

Spirit of Peace is working alongside and in partnership with others to rise to the above challenge, in the field of peace building and social cohesion.

 ESSENCE

Across the world today millions of people are developing a new consciousness that we are all interconnected in the web of life. Unity consciousness is fundamental to Spirit of Peace, it is this understanding  which energises our work. It also inspired the work of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr Martin Luther King both of whom have influenced our work.

In the words of the Sufi poet Rumi:

Beyond our ideas of right doing and wrong doing,

There is a field. I’ll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass,

The world is too full to talk about.

Ideas, languages, even the phrase ‘each other’

don’t make sense any more.

CURRENT AREAS OF WORK INCLUDE:

  • Regular local meetings bringing diverse people and groups together, including those who had not previously been able to communicate with each other.
  •  Developing citizen education and training in nonviolence and holistic peace building skills, developed with our frontline partners in the Middle East.
  • Exploring and using the creative arts such as storytelling, as a tool for peace building.
  • A positive focus on trauma reduction and healing the wounds that lead to further conflict. To quote one of our partners, Ibrahim Issa, Director of Hope Flowers School and Community Development Centre, Bethlehem,   “All violence is the result of unhealed wounds”.
  • Restoring hope that peace is possible and empowering citizens by building connections with our international partners.
  • Supporting the work of international peace builders to bring about nonviolent solutions in areas of conflict, especially the Middle East and raising public awareness of positive initiatives, including Hope Flowers, Bethlehem, Jerusalem Peacemakers and The Lights of Peace Centre in East Jerusalem and Nazareth.

Founded in 2008, Spirit of Peace has drawn on the talents and skills of our volunteers for its early development. In order to meet the growing demand for our work we welcome your personal involvement and/or financial support.
